At the moment she is spending six months conducting research at Catch, where she has established a temporary research laboratory.

Laura’s research positions itself in-between the fields of art and technology, and the project she is currently researching concerns the topic of bioacoustics. Through the project Laura questions if the human race ever will be able of reciprocal communication with species that differs drastically from us, e.g. plants. The project emanates from the discovery that plants emit tiny, high frequency, clicking sounds from their roots, allegedly by bursting tiny bubbles of air. These sounds emitted are between 20-300 kHz and the human hearing range is between 20 Hz to 20 kHz, therefore it is not sounds we would normally here. The discovery has been research as a possible way of communication between plants, but at the moment no-one knows the exact reason. In Laura’s experiments she detects the clicking sounds in real time by the use of contact microphones fastened to the roots of the plants. Following the sounds are converted and down sampled to fit within the human hearing range, which makes them audible to humans. And so the question remains; when we listen to these clicks, can we even imagine that we could understand the plant and respond to its communication?

The project started in 2017 and relates to Laura’s interest and earlier experiments with plant intelligence.[/vc_custom_heading][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row unlock_row_content=”yes” row_height_percent=”0″ override_padding=”yes” h_padding=”2″ top_padding=”2″ bottom_padding=”2″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”0″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ shift_x=”2″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”-5″ z_index=”0″ width=”1/2″][vc_single_image media=”74885″ media_width_percent=”80″ alignment=”center” css_animation=”alpha-anim” animation_delay=”200″ lbox_skin=”white”][/vc_column][vc_column column_width_percent=”100″ expand_height=”yes” overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ width=”1/2″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
